Journeys: Never Alone

“I used to think the worst thing in life was to end up all alone. It’s not. The worst thing in life is to end up with people that make you feel all alone.”
-Robin Williams, in World’s Greatest Dad

There are times when the journey through life can seem hard, there are times when it is hard.  There are times when the journey seems shrouded in darkness; there are times when it is.  It has already been a very long walk, hasn’t it?  Sunny paths, shady paths, dark tunnels…  in our myriad of life experiences, we tread them all.  Some of us can always find the will to keep going; some of us struggle to take the next step; some of us simply cease to do so.

On a planet with seven billion people, how is it possible to feel alone?  The feeling of intense isolation is an emotional phenomenon that we may each fall vulnerable to when we find ourselves walking through a tunnel of darkness.  The darkness around you may be so heavy that you cannot see the people beside you, or feel the love surrounding you, but they are there.  Though they may be hidden, they are ever present on your journey.  You are not alone.  You are not alone.

Winston Churchill is famously quoted as having said, “If you are going through hell, keep going.”  When you find yourself in the darkness of the tunnel, don’t stop!  There is always light at the end, we just need to hold on and keep moving forward until we reach it.  Often there will be yet another tunnel ahead, but always – always – there is light at the end of that one, too.  And in the light you can see all the people who love you, all the people who support you on the journey, all those who walk beside you even through the darkness.

Whoever you are, if you are reading this, I am so glad you are with me on this journey.
