Storehouse: Right Here, Right Now

Don’t Make Lists

Every day a new flower rises
from your body’s fresh soil.
Don’t go around looking
for fallen petals
in a fairy tale, when you’ve
got the golden plant
right here, now,
shooting forth in light from your eyes,
your awakening crown.

Don’t make lists, or explore ancient accounts.
Forget everything you know
and open.

~ Dorothy Walters

Beauty is ageless, timeless, and inherent in all things in the natural world, including human beings; but it is not unchangeable.  A tree is beautiful in all seasons of the year, even though it is strikingly different throughout.

I am in the autumn of my life, and like deciduous trees let their leaves fall, so too am I finding this to be a period of letting go.  It took me a long while to grow to the point where I am able to be aware enough to know that I have the strength within me to break down the obstacles of my own construction and get out of my own way.  It took me a long while to realize that I had to stop making lists, and start crossing off the items on them.  I am finally, most days, able to let go of the illusory limitations that have held me back from achieving what I define as success, and which have caused me to worry about the future, rather than rejoicing in today.  It has taken me a long while to gain the vision that enables me to “forget everything I knew”, and simply allow myself to unapologetically be who I am.  To simply allow myself to be beautiful.  (And in truth, it is still a work in progress.)

In our minds exist our memories of yesterday and our dreams for tomorrow, and they are of immeasurable value.  This is our storehouse of the mind, and to a great measure contributes to the beauty of who we each uniquely are.  But in reality, all that exists for us is Today – the physical location in which we stand, the figurative location of “where we’re at”, and this moment in time.  And we have the ability to create a life that causes us joy in each of those, if only we are open.

Can you let go of those ideas and habits that hold you back, and allow yourself to be beautiful, right here, now?
