Ecology: Earth and Spirit

The majority of us are acutely aware that there are critical environmental issues facing us today: global climate change, depletion of species, increasing scarcity of resources…   On the whole, our collective attitude about the earth and our relationship to it requires careful examination.  Regardless of the character of one’s religious beliefs (or non-belief), it is essential that we accept that we as human beings have a spiritual responsibility to the planet.  Ecological sustainability necessarily depends on it.

When we consider our place in the interdependent web of all existence, we gain an understanding of the unity of all things.  As we acknowledge that we are One with all creation, we cannot deny that our own health and well being are inextricably tied to those of the planet itself.  We understand that our habits and perspectives have a profound effect on the world around us.  Is this enough to motivate us to take action?

If we evolve our attitude even further, and recognize the essence of the earth as sacred, our task becomes much clearer.  We have no choice but to do all that we can to honor our spiritual responsibility to her, and her sacred essence – in our response to environmental issues, as well as in our daily living.  “Being green” then becomes a spiritual practice.

What action can you initiate today to honor your spiritual responsibility to the earth?
