Lambsong

I wrote this song in 1986 when Bob and I were serving a small Methodist church in Alabama. Even then I was questioning the divine ‘ness’ of this Christian holiday. All over the world there are religions and philosophies that each hold their divine. No one religion of faith has squatting rights over the truth and the ancient  traditions existed and thrived long before my childhood bible thumping scripture memorizing faith took root in my childhood wonder.

But these words hold me. Not as the only truth. Not because I believe in the divine birth. But because, all over the world, in our own faiths, in our own unique doctrines of spirituality, there is wonder.

Lambsong (1986)

Mary had a little lamb; Whose heart was white as snow

And every where that Mary went – The lamb was sure to go

She was just a girl

He was just a boy

Who had a child

The story goes

But did they know…. He would be king?

Then Gabriel came to Mary; And told her she was blessed

The angels told the shepherds – The babe was heaven sent

To just a girl ……And just a boy

Who had a child……The story goes

But did they know…. He would be king?

There was no room for Mary; No shelter on this earth

The babe was born in solitude -Of poor and lowly birth

To just a girl ……And just a boy

Who had a child……The story goes

But did they know…. He would be king?

And so and so the story goes ; To all who would believe

That baby in that manger – Was born for you and me…

To just a girl and just a boy

Who had a child, the story goes..

But did they know?

This song goes straight to the heart and soul of the universal. So right. So inclusive. I would love to hear you sing it sometime.
